Quite possibly the most beautiful tree in the world..  The Rainbow Eucalyptus has a trunk that shows off multi-colored layers of bark, producing a rainbow of shades.

When this tree gets a good dose of water, its trunk will swell, causing its bark to peel off in paperlike sheets- each exposed layer displays a different color- from reds to oranges,  greens and purples, even blueish hues. Whats more, the leaves release a light pleasant Eucalyptus scent when crushed- I throw them in my hot tub on occasion.

A fast grower, Eucalyptus Deglupta loves sun, humidity and water. Give it a sunny spot with rich organic soil and watch it go. Can reach 60 feet in the tropics, more likely 40-45 feet high in Florida. It’s canopy is lush without being overpowering for plants below. There is a well known grouping of these trees on the “Hana Highway” in Maui.

Rainbow Eucalyptus is cold hardy down to the mid-high 20′s. I have two mature specimens in my garden that easily dealt with an overnight low of 25-26F.

You may have seen this unusual tree at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom in the “Africa” section- its hard to miss, as it has large “sausage” fruits that hang down on vines from the canopy.

A favorite in tropical botanical gardens, the Sausage Tree makes a great canopy/shade tree and has the added bonus of its crazy exotic look to give your garden a true unusual element.

Kigelia Africana is originally from Africa-  its tough leaves hold up well to wind and harsh conditions.  In the warm season, it will drop a multitude of “ropes” from the canopy- from which hanging flower clusters emerge.  In its native habitat, these reddish-purple flowers are propagated by bats (not to mention eaten by a variety of African wildlife). In my garden in Melbourne Beach, I notice the bees and moths taking a liking to them.

After the flowers are pollinated, the fruits will begin to appear.  After a few months, the fruits can become up to 3 feet long!  A fully fruited Sausage Tree is sight to behold- truly beautiful and odd at the same time.

Giant white squiggly pinwheel flowers appear on the ends of branches and release a scent that is to die for. Like a mix of Tahitian Gardenia and Arabian Jasmine.  It will also produce small round fruits.

So:   Unusual Tropical Look- check.  Beautiful Heavily Fragrant Flowers- check.  Deep Green Leaves- check. You can’t go wrong!

Crassa likes bright light (60-85% sun) humidity and moist rich soil. Water regularly in the warm months and fertilize with a timed release like Osmocote.  Can defoliate in a severe snap, but will regrow in the spring.  Very cool and uncommon!

A fast grower, Ylang Ylang (which means “flower of flowers”) can reach 30-35 feet or you can trim it back to maintain a certain size. Likes rich organic soil, full sun to light shade. Creates a nice dappled shade for tropicals to grow in underneath.

The flowers create a very pleasant tropical fragrance that will waft through your entire garden- I also pick the flowers and bring them inside in a bowl- it makes the house smell great. A must-have for the true tropical garden.
