The less often seen “other Swiss Cheese Plant”,  Monstera adansonii (aka Monstera friedrichsthalii) has an unmistakably bizarre leaf form.  It is often misidentified as Monstera obliqua.

Natural holes appear almost immediately- the leaves are on average about 5-6″ long, but will get considerably larger on mature plants allowed to climb.

This plant has a fast moving vining habit- it prefers bright light / part sun, humidity and rich organic soil.  Plant it against something it can climb on and watch it get big. Creates a very exotic jungle look.

Can also be grown as a houseplant in a pot or hanging basket. Very cool!

Easy to grow, you don’t see this one very often!

A great grower, with deep green leaves and almost constantly flowering if given bright light.  Easily as cold hardy as any standard hibiscus- I’ve had absolutely no problems with cold in zone 9.

This one performs best if the branches are allowed to ramble a bit, even planted behind other lower landscaping. The branches will protrude out and over other plants, and then dangle out  beautiful red fringed flowers where they are easily seen. Can also be trained into a tree form for maximum “hanging lantern” effect.

“Red Lantern” likes bright light- 70-90% sun, with moist rich soil. Fertilize regularly and everyone will notice this flower in your garden!

Vigorous and easy to grow, “Fiji Island” has proven to be as cold hardy as any standard hibiscus. Keep trimmed to maintain a bushy form, or let it ramble in between other plants, popping out blooms anywhere it finds an open spot.

Likes a bright spot in 70-90% sun. Plant in rich, organic soil and fertilize/water regularly.

Yellow Plume and Orange Flame like humidity and rich, moist organic soil.  Cut way back in late winter to produce a bushy plant with fresh deep green leaves.  Take the excess cuttings and plunge into the soil to expand your clump.

Cold hardy to the 20′s – severe colds may cause defoliation, just cut back after winter and it will regrow.  This plant is one of my personal favorites.

When young, the leaves are solid- if left to climb, the leaf form will morph to a massive size with curved serrated edges and “swiss cheese” holes throughout.

This plant also makes a tasty edible fruit, thus the name “Deliciosa”.  Fruit appears on mature climbers.

Not fussy about cold, just give it something to climb and plenty of water, fertilizer and light. Also makes an excellent indoor houseplant near a sunny window.

Cold hardy, and easy to grow- Epipremnum pinnatum is native to the Phillipines, and is neither a Monstera nor a Philodendron.

It will easily climb along fences, walls and especially the trunks of palms and trees. It is easy to maintain, just cut it back if it gets too large or climbs too far.  I use Epipremnum pinnatum to cover the waterfall next to my pool, and also to climb up tree and palm trunks in the garden. The pinnate leaves give the perfect tropical look..  filling your garden out with this one really adds the true exotic touch.

Epipremnum pinnatum can also be grown as an indoor houseplant where it can climb up a totem or wall.

Easy to grow, Chenille Plant likes rich moist soil and a sunny to partly sunny location.  Can get up to 8 feet tall or can easily be pruned back to desired size. Fills in areas nicely without becoming invasive.

Keep the soil mulched to conserve moisture, as Chenille Plant will get wilty if it dries out- however, a good watering will snap a wilted plant right back into shape. The eye catching unusual flowers make an impressive statement in the tropical garden!
